Agent Assist & Copilots AI Agents & Chatbots Help Desk & Ticketing
Open-source omnichannel support desk you can self-host or run in the cloud, with the Captain AI agent, copilot drafts and a help center.
Teams that want an open-source, self-hostable omnichannel support desk with an AI agent and copilot, from a free tier or $19 per agent in the cloud.
You want a high-volume autonomous AI agent as the core purchase, since Captain ships with a few hundred credits per plan and relies on OpenAI even when self-hosted.
Chatwoot is an open-source customer support platform, released under the MIT License, that positions itself as the self-hostable alternative to Intercom and Zendesk. It brings website live chat, email (Outlook, Gmail or any IMAP/SMTP inbox), Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram, Line and SMS into one threaded inbox, and recently added voice: calls arrive through a Twilio number or WhatsApp calling and are recorded, transcribed and threaded alongside every other channel. Around the inbox sit macros, automation rules, a multi-portal help center with custom domains and AI search, CSAT and team reports, and an open API with webhooks.
The AI layer is Captain. Pointed at your help center, PDFs and website, it answers routine questions end to end and hands off when a person should step in; Copilot drafts replies for agents from docs and history; Memories keeps notes about each customer from past chats; Content gap spots questions your docs cannot answer and drafts FAQs for approval; Monitors count conversations matching a theme you describe in plain words; Triage sets priority, labels and team on new conversations; and Scenarios follow written steps and call tools. If you self-host, note that Captain connects to OpenAI's GPT models, so the AI is not fully on your own infrastructure even when the rest of the stack is. Automatic translation of incoming messages is marked as coming soon.
Chatwoot Inc says more than 15,000 businesses use the product, and the GitHub repository has about 37,000 stars and 400+ contributors. Its investor page names founders and operators on the cap table, including Austen Allred (BloomTech), Kurt Mackey (Fly.io) and Mikhail Seregine (Outschool). Named customers include FairDee, Converso and American Cloud. The cloud service carries a SOC 2 Type II badge and runs on AWS in the United States.
Pricing is published per agent. The cloud Hacker plan is free for up to 2 agents and 500 conversations a month but has live chat only and no Captain; Startups is $19 per agent with 300 Captain credits, Business $39 with voice, teams, automation rules and 500 credits, and Enterprise $99 with SSO and audit logs and 800 credits. Extra credits cost $20 per 1,000. Self-hosting is free in the Community Edition, without Captain, voice or custom branding; Premium Support at $19 per agent adds Captain, and the $99 Enterprise Edition adds SSO and SLA policies. Choose Chatwoot if data control, an open codebase or low per-seat cost matters more than a polished AI agent. Skip it if you want autonomous resolution as the main event, since Captain's allowances are modest and the platform's strength is the inbox.
