Estimates assume 5,000 conversations a month, 60% handled by AI and 10 agent seats, at each vendor's published list price (the cost calculator's model); treat them as a floor, not a quote. Compliance rows are what vendors publicly claim, and “Not verified” means we have not confirmed that fact yet, not that the tool lacks it.

Choose Trengo or Zendesk AI Agents?

Choose Trengo if

Best for: European retail, ecommerce, hospitality and leisure businesses where WhatsApp drives customer contact and one AI agent should handle both support and lead qualification, from 299 euros a month for 10 users.

  • you need deep e-commerce and Shopify support
  • you need SMS and WhatsApp coverage
  • you prefer a flat subscription to usage-based billing

Look elsewhere if you are a very small team or mostly handle email tickets, since the entry plan is 299 euros a month and AI conversations carry a per-conversation surcharge on top.

Choose Zendesk AI Agents if

Best for: Teams already on Zendesk that want autonomous agents drawing on their knowledge base and ticket history across email, chat, messaging and voice, billed per automated resolution at $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, with a 14-day trial, 80 languages, hosting in the US, EEA or Asia Pacific and compliance up to FedRAMP and ISO 42001.

  • you need enterprise scale, security, and compliance
  • you need a vendor that publicly claims SOC 2, HIPAA, and ISO 27001
  • you would rather pay per resolved ticket than per seat

Look elsewhere if you do not run Zendesk, or you want a flat bill: the agents are built into the Zendesk Suite, the fully autonomous Advanced tier is billed per resolution on top of seats, and the Essential tier is far more limited.

About Trengo

Trengo is a European omnichannel inbox, built in the Netherlands and strongest where WhatsApp is the main customer channel. It is an official WhatsApp Business Partner, and its shared inbox brings WhatsApp, email, live chat, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, SMS and voice calls together with the customer's details next to each conversation. Retail and ecommerce, travel and hospitality, health and wellness, and leisure are the industries it designs for, and the product spans support and sales: the same AI agent that handles order questions also qualifies inbound leads, syncs with the CRM and books meetings.

The AI Agent, called HelpMate on the pricing page, is trained on your help center, FAQs and documents, follows tone and escalation rules you define, and can take basic actions such as order tracking through integrations, applying labels and calling third-party APIs. It deploys across WhatsApp, email, chat, social and voice, answers in 70+ languages, and identifies gaps in its own knowledge so you can fill them. Trengo claims up to 80 percent of queries resolved before a human steps in. AI Journeys, multi-step automations across channels, is still in beta, and Dessa is a newer AI agent for ecommerce brands that acts as both support agent and shopping assistant. Broadcasting for proactive WhatsApp campaigns is sold as an add-on.

Trengo was founded in Utrecht in 2017, raised a $36 million Series A in 2021, and says it has 1,500+ customers, 100+ employees and 100 million conversations a year. Patrick Meutzner is CEO and Marcel van de Weerd is co-founder and CTO. Published results include Dentakay, which saves 270 hours a month with automated lead qualification; Defqon.1, which saved 170+ hours with AI and WhatsApp service; Goedgemerkt, which handled a 240 percent peak-season ticket surge without growing the team; and Europarcs, running 52 parks on one system. The application is hosted on AWS and Trengo describes GDPR as core to the platform.

Pricing is published in euros, per team rather than per seat. Boost is 299 euros a month billed annually (349 monthly) for 10 users and 6,000 conversations a year; Pro is 499 euros (599 monthly) for 20 users and 18,000 conversations; Enterprise is custom. A conversation is any reply within a 7-day window. AI costs extra: conversations the AI Agent handles carry a surcharge of 0.25 euros each on annual billing or 0.30 monthly, and additional conversations cost 15 euros per 100. Choose Trengo if WhatsApp drives your customer contact and you want support and lead qualification in one European-hosted inbox. Skip it if you are a two-person team, because the 299 euro floor is high for small volumes, or if email ticketing is all you need.

About Zendesk AI Agents

Zendesk AI agents resolve customer requests autonomously across email, chat, messaging, and voice, and they have the advantage of sitting on one of the most widely used support platforms on earth. Because they are built into Zendesk's help desk, the agents draw on your knowledge base and years of past tickets to answer questions instantly, then hand off to a human with full context when a conversation needs one. Zendesk also threads AI through the agent workspace itself with a copilot that suggests replies, detects intent, and summarizes long tickets.

The lineup comes in two flavors. The Essential tier bundles friendly generative answers into the Suite, while the Advanced tier, built on Zendesk's acquisition of Ultimate, goes fully autonomous, working off-script and calling your APIs to actually get things done. In keeping with where the industry is heading, the Advanced agents are billed per resolution, so you pay for issues solved rather than seats filled.

There is a fun irony in Zendesk's origins. The company was founded in 2007 by three friends in a Copenhagen loft who wanted support software that felt human instead of clunky, and its deliberately approachable branding helped it grow into an industry giant, go public, and later get taken private in a deal worth roughly ten billion dollars. More recently it has been on an AI shopping spree, absorbing companies to bolt voice, quality assurance, and deeper automation onto the platform. In March 2026 it completed the acquisition of Forethought, whose self-learning agents it now sells as Forethought AI Agents by Zendesk, pitched for any help desk stack rather than only its own.

Real customers put it to work in colorful ways: cosmetics brand Lush named its Zendesk agent Marvin and uses it to resolve a large share of first contacts. For the enormous number of teams already running support on Zendesk, switching on its native AI agents is often the shortest path of least resistance to real automation, with no new vendor to onboard and no data to migrate.
